What are Ingrown Hairs and what causes them?
Shaving. It’s a common hair removal method that is used worldwide. However despite its advantages, every now and again, some people experience a few ingrown hairs. An ingrown hair occurs after you shave, and happens when cut hair gets trapped underneath the skin due to its direction of growth or dead skin cells which obstruct its growth. As a result when trying to grow out, the hair gets trapped and a little red bump appears on the skin’s surface.
Who gets ingrown hairs and where?
Anyone can get ingrown hairs as they depend on a lot of factors such as a person’s skin type, their razor and their shaving method. An ingrown hair can also pop up anywhere, but are more common in the underarm and bikini area.
How to prevent ingrown hairs?
This applies to face, arms, underarms, legs, and bikini area.
Tip 1 - Exfoliate
Ingrown hairs are commonly caused due to dead skin cell that can obstruct a hair’s growth. Exfoliating regularly helps remove these cells which not only help reduce the chance of ingrown hairs, but also help keep your skin feeling smooth. There are many ways you can exfoliate, such as using exfoliating body scrubs or exfoliating gloves. We recommend using a Braun Silk Epil 9 Skin Spa which comes with rotating body exfoliating brushes, as it is proven to refine skin 4X better than manual peeling.
Tip 2 – Don’t go Dry
Moisturisation and hydration is key to helping reduce the chances of ingrown hairs as it helps keep your skin cells healthy. Firstly, make sure you wet your hairs before you shave with a warm bath or shower. This will help soften the hairs for an easier and cleaner cut. You can also use a shave prep such as Venus Satin Care Sensitive to help with hydration and protection. Finally, do not forget to use your favorite moisturizer when you are done to keep your skin healthy, hydrated and soft.
Tip 3 – Change your Blades
We always recommend using a razor with at least 3 blades. In comparison to 2 bladed razors, the blades are spaced closer together and also catch more hairs in a single stroke. However, no matter what razor you use, a dull razor can tug the hair and also have a less optimal cut which can increase the chances of getting an ingrown hair. So, make sure to change your blades or razor when you feel it getting dull.
Tip 4 – Be consistent
Stay on top of ingrown hairs by following these top tips every time you shave, and enjoy that smooth Venus Shave feeling.
